It's double pinned, hooked breech, long tang and double set triggers.Both rifles are Investarm rifles, the flintlock is a Lyman Great Plains Rifle and the percussion is a Cabela's .58 caliber Hawken. I'm thinking about swapping out the percussion breech plug on one rifle for the flintlock breech plug on another. The flintlock is .50 caliber and the percussion is .58 caliber. My small tree critters have always been dropped with a .32 or .36, and they excel on small game. With a .40 all shots need to be at the head/neck area even with very light loads. Mid-body hits might be okay, you'll just have to see. Test the loads at 25 yards, that's the average range for shots in the squirrel woods.The recipe I have is this: Stumpy's Moose Snot. Beeswax 2 oz. Castor Oil 8 oz. Murphy's Oil Soap 1 oz. Brownells has a method of using stainless steel wool wrapped around a bore brush soaked in Kroil. Scrub the bore thoroughly and clean out the mess. The method does not remove pitting, even so it typically makes for a very shootable barrel.It is nice and small and reasonably easy to make. The pattern is drawn on 1" squares. In my trying the patch over powder I did find more accuracy and consistency of point of impact. That being said, I was wondering about different techniques. I was placing the patch into the barrel only the depth of the short starter and then ramming my patched ball home.So here goes---Hawkens 45 and 50 are 15/16. Hawkens 54 and larger 1 inch. Seneca 36 and 45 are 13/16. Renegades are 1 inch. But here is the real difference between the Hawken and the Seneca, the Seneca is a completely scaled down version of the Hawken. It looks tiny compared to a Hawken.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for.
